Event description

Description

The Association for Astronomy and Macquarie University invite you to come and observe Mars during its Opposition on July 27th, 2018.

The Mars Opposition is the closest approach the planet takes in its journey around the Sun, and will be the brightest and closest it has been in 15 years. We will be opening the doors to our Observatory and allow you to take a peek at the red planet at this exciting point in its solar orbit, and mingle with our astronomers! We will also be holding short talks among other exciting activities.

Please note the following important information:

  • This event is FREE.
  • Chairs will be provided only in very limited supply, we recommend you bring your own chairs and picnic blankets to stay comfortable.
  • It tends to be quite cool at the observatory, so dress warmly! Bring a coat, and gloves!
  • No food will be available on-site, however we will provide light refreshments, including tea and coffee. Feel free to bring your own picnic!
  • BYO Telescopes are more than welcome, however we please ask you purchase a BYO telescope ticket, and fill in THIS FORM, so we can ensure we have enough space to accomodate you.
  • Tickets will be limited to 6 per person; Please do not buy bulk tickets unless you absolutley guarantee you will be attending, as we have only limited tickets available.

Please make sure you download the EventBrite app onto your phone, so we can digitally scan in your ticket. You are able to print the tickets also, but please think of the trees before you do.

We will be running observing in two sessions:

7:30pm-9:00pm: Families and Children

9:00pm-10:30pm: Families and Adults

Short talks will be at 8pm and 9pm.

Adverse Weather Information:

Whilst we reserve our right to cancel this event should there be any adverse weather conditions, including heavy cloud and rain, we will reschedule the event to the 31st of July to allow you to still have an opportunity to view Mars.

We look forward to welcoming you!

Clear Skies.
