Description

Marram-nganjinu biik-gurrin (We Are Country) First Nations Cultural Summit

Held on the lands of the Kulin nation, Marram-nganjinu biik-gurrin is an international First Nations cultural summit that will help forge a new direction of leadership in the cultural and creative sectors.

The three-day summit will explore where First Nations sit within the broader cultural ecology, and champion ways to employ the inherent rights First Nations have in managing and defining their individual and collective cultural and creative futures.

Marram-nganjinu biik-gurrin will be a space for First Nations to own our own business. It will be delivered through a distinctly strong First Nations voice that will create a culturally safe space to interrogate, debate and strategize concepts such as “decolonising spaces and practices” and “asserting cultural sovereignty and authority”.

As such, registration will only be open to First Nations people.

We know that Marram-nganjinu biik-gurrin will be of strong interest to all areas of the arts and cultural sector. For those interested, there will be two open 'Public Gallery' sessions during the summit for you to gain insight into the issues and solutions around cultural sovereignty of First Nations. Please check the YIRRAMBOI website closer to the date to find out more information.

Marram-nganjinu biik-gurrin is presented by the British Council and the Australia Council for the Arts, and is proudly supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, City of Melbourne and Arts NSW.

FAQs

Who is registration open to?

Registration is open to First Nations people from across the world. Delegates should be established practitioners, well respected in their community, with the capacity to make change. They can work in arts management or across any art form, but should be committed to engaging in big conversations, and sharing their vision and experience with an international network of First Nations leaders in arts and culture.

All delegates must be 18+ years of age.

Please note that places are limited and if we are unable to accommodate all delegates their registration fees will be returned in full.

What does the Registration Fee include?

  • Morning tea and lunch on each day of the Summit
  • Access to special delegate discounts to ticketed YIRRAMBOI Festival events
  • GST

All travel and accommodation costs are the responsibility of delegates. Delegates will be sent venue details and a variety of accommodation options in March 2017.

What are my transport/parking options getting to the Summit when in Melbourne?

We suggest delegates leave cars at their hotels and use Melbourne's public transport service during their stay for the Summit. We encourage delegates to purchase a Myki card - a re-usable travel card, which can be used on all Melbourne public transport systems, including buses, trams and trains. Please note that all conference venues will be within the free tram zone. You will need a Myki card to travel, but you will not be charged for travel between the conference venues.

What are my access options?

We will make every effort to ensure all Marram-nganjinu biik-gurrin events are accessible to every delegate. If you have any access requirements, please outline this in your registration and a member of the Summit team will contact you. Delegates are welcome to attend with a translator at no additional cost.

If you require accessibility support for the summit please contact the Producer - Event Delivery: tahni.froudist@britishcouncil.org.au
