Event description

Description

The Flag’s Up records the arrivals and departures of many of the most important ships and people from Sydney in the first 20 years of the South Head Lookout Post (now the South Head Signal Station) between 1790 and 1809. These included Governors and explorers, free settlers and convicts, Aborigines and Maoris and a multitude of colourful characters.

The 200th anniversaries of these events were commemorated by the Woollahra History and Heritage Society.
Their President, Peter Poland, who researched the stories of these events, will talk about them and tell us about some of the fascinating and unusual things he found out in this research.

Peter was born in a naval family and served in the Royal Navy for 30 years and 2½ years in the Royal Australian Navy.

His last command was HMS Zest, which he brought in to Sydney Harbour in 1968. He has since retired and has worked successfully in both local and Australian history and heritage.

Includes: afternoon tea
