Mapping the Pacific will examine the mapping of the Pacific from the early modern era through to the 19th century.

About this event

Mapping the Pacific will examine the traditional wayfinding knowledge of the Pacific community, European exploration and the mapping of the Pacific from the early modern era through to the 19th century. The year 2020 is the 500th anniversary of Ferdinand Magellan’s entry into the Pacific and the 250th anniversary of James Cook’s extraordinary exploration and mapping of the Pacific.

The conference will be held at the State Library, which holds one of the most significant collections of maps in Australia. It will be open to cartographers, geographers, historians, map collectors, curators and everyone with an interest in maps.

This conference is planned as a three-day event, commencing with an opening reception on the evening of 6 September at the State Library of New South Wales.

Ticket entitlements

All single day tickets to the conference include access to the day's lecture program, as well as the opening event on the evening of Sunday, 6 September.

All tickets include morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea for each day.

Conference dinner

The conference dinner will include two courses and wine, and will be held on Tuesday, 8 September at the Union, University & Schools Club of Sydney.

Cost for the dinner is not included in the conference ticket. Conference dinner tickets are $90 per person, partners welcome. Please register here.

Special event

A post-conference special event at the National Library of Australia has been arranged. A bus will be departing Sydney on the afternoon of Wednesday, 9 September and returning to Sydney on the afternoon of Friday, 11 September.

This is a free event, although bookings are required for two nights of accommodation and transport. Cost is not included in the conference ticket. Please register here.
