Event description

Description

Learn to weave a konae (2 x corner basket) with harakeke (flax).

Connect with nature and get creative while using traditional New Zealand Maori techniques along with your own contemporary ideas to explore this amazing plant and fibre. Alice will teach you the traditional techniques of weaving with New Zealand harakeke (flax) and together you will explore and discuss the processes, traditions, Tikanga (protocols) around weaving as well as how to nurture the plant and how to harvest sustainably. All materials and resources are provided.

Whether you are a beginner or have experience in other weaving techniques, you will enjoy a day of weaving in a safe and nurturing environment that suits all abilities.

MEET ALICE:

Alice graduated from Te Wananga O Raukawa in Otaki, NZ (2002) with a Diploma in Maori Design and Art and started her journey into the expression of art in Christchurch, NZ where she exhibited and sold her works nationally and internationally.

She has a deep passion for creating artworks that inspire, challenge or initiate change. Alice also weaves with traditional NZ Harakeke (Flax) fibre as well as paints in oils and acrylics and her artworks have depth and texture that combine various mixed media mediums into her works. She has run successful weaving workshops around NZ, Australia and the US. She has run a series of workshops at The Australian Museum in Sydney, the Woodford Folk Festival and was also invited to teach at the renowned Spirit Weavers Gathering in California.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Brick+Mortar is on George St, just off The Parade in Norwood, behind the Town Hall. There is plenty of on-street 2 hour free parking (but plenty of parking inspectors so beware!), and the open air paid carpark above Foodland (access off Webbe St) has all day parking for only $6. Bus routes run up The Parade regularly and the closest bus stop is just before the Town Hall.

Of course! We have a full cafe on the ground floor, so just make sure you arrive in time to order your coffee and you can take it in with you.
