Event description

What is Alpha?

The Alpha course is a non-denominational course which seeks to introduce the basics of the Christian faith through a series of talks and discussions. It is an opportunity for people to explore the meaning of life.

The Alpha course has run in over 100 countries and over 100 languages, with over 24 million people having taken the course.

In Alpha, we examine questions of the meaning of life in the context of a meal, some humor, a short teaching and a chance for free response and discussion (within a small group setting) to the topic being considered. Some of the subjects being examined are:

  • Does God guide us today?
  • How to resist evil?
  • What can I do with the rest of my life?
  • How and why should I pray? and
  • Who is Jesus and why did he die?

Why Alpha?

Millions of people around the world have done the Alpha course. People come on the Alpha course for many different reasons:

  • Some have never been to church and want to investigate whether God exists;
  • Others may have attended church and want to further explore the relevance of the Christian faith to their daily lives.
  • Some have questions about life and God and are looking for an opportunity to ask questions, and share their point of view in an open, friendly environment.
  • Many people have come to faith in Jesus Christ through the Alpha Course.
  • Many more have been strengthened in their faith and knowledge of God’s Word because of the Alpha Course.
  • Alpha presents an excellent opportunity for you to share your faith with friends, family and work colleagues. Simply invite them to participate in the course and support them by either attending too, or asking them about their experience on the course.
  • The dinner and group discussions also enable participants to connect with each other
  • Since Alpha is centered around the Christian faith, it provides a vehicle to connect with God.

We believe everyone should have the opportunity to explore life and the Christian faith. The Alpha course is a space to have conversations about life, faith and Jesus in an authentic and no-pressure environment. Listen, learn, discuss and discover. Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile.

How does it work?

Alpha is organised as a series of sessions over 10 weeks, including a day away. Each session starts with a meal, followed by a talk and then discussion in small groups. The talks aim to cover the basic beliefs of the Christian faith.

Every session begins with food. Eating food together creates space for people to connect, relax and share life on a deeper level.

The Alpha talks are designed to engage people from all walks of life and inspire conversation. They explore the big issues of life and faith and unpack the basics of Christian belief, addressing questions like “Who is Jesus?”, “Why and how do I pray?” and “How does God guide us?

The talks are designed to encourage conversation and explore the Christian faith in a friendly, open and informal environment.

The topics for the talks are:

  • Who Is Jesus?
  • Why Did Jesus Die?
  • How Can I Have Faith?
  • Why and How Do I Read the Bible?
  • Why and How Do I Pray?
  • How Does God Guide Us?
  • Who Is The Holy Spirit?
  • What Does the Holy Spirit Do?
  • How Can I Be Filled With the Holy Spirit?
  • How Can I Resist Evil?
  • Does God Heal Today ?
  • What about the Church?
  • How Can I Make the Most of the Rest of My Life?

The discussion time is an opportunity for people to respond to the talk, hear from others, and contribute their own perspective in an honest, friendly, and open environment.

The discussion is where you can share your thoughts. There is no pressure and no follow up.
