Description

gig economy

noun

  1. a labour market characterised by the prevalence of short-term contracts or freelance work as opposed to permanent jobs.

  2. "working in the gig economy means constantly being subjected to last-minute scheduling"

The ‘gig economy’ is expanding at a rapid rate with many people looking for the lifestyle choice and the potential to earn extra income.

An article in ‘The Australian’ said, ‘In Australia, these task-by-task workers, nicknamed “giggers’’, are also beginning to flex their muscles in the national workforce. In 2014-15 4.1 million Australians or 32 per cent of the workforce, freelanced. This freelance economy is represented by armies of drivers, delivery riders, dog walkers and a host of service providers whose tasks range from creating corporate logos to building IKEA shelves. They’re tipped to provide a much-needed kick to the global economy. By 2025, McKinsey analysis shows that online talent platforms — a matchmaking service that brings together freelance jobs and giggers — could raise global GDP by up to $2.7 trillion and increase employment by 72 million full-time equivalent positions.’

But it goes beyond the ‘giggers’. There is a huge market of people with highly specialised skills that are available for short term hire. There are many companies managing this new workforce well without the need for agencies. So how can you do it?

We will cover:

  • What do you need to consider when moving towards this model
  • What are the risks involved?
  • How do you manage a gig workforce?
  • How do you find the specialist skills needed for your gig role?
  • Can it work successfully?
