Managing Expectations and Supervisor Relationships in your HDR Journey

Managing Expectations and Supervisor Relationships in your HDR Journey

By University of Newcastle

Overview

This workshop offers practical, candid insights designed to help candidates set themselves up for a healthier, more sustainable candidature.

Starting an HDR can feel exciting, but also a little opaque. Many candidates enter their candidature with strong (but often unspoken) expectations about supervision, progress, feedback, and support, only to discover later that their supervisor’s expectations may look quite different.

This 90-minute workshop helps HDR candidates surface and articulate their own expectations, understand how supervisory expectations can vary across supervisors and schools, and develop strategies for establishing productive working relationships from the outset. Participants will explore how to initiate clear conversations with supervisors, navigate differences in working styles, and approach difficult conversations early and constructively.

Drawing on her experience as a former HDR candidate at UON and extensive professional experience supporting HDR candidates as a student advocate, this workshop – led by Dr Ash McIntyre – offers practical, candid insights designed to help candidates set themselves up for a healthier, more sustainable candidature.
