Description

The implementation of the NDIS will disrupt traditional ways of working and the disability sector will have to adapt to new ways of working under NDIS. This includes new ways of employing and managing disability support workers.

This workshop aims to help employers make practical employment decisions that align with their long term strategic objectives. In particular we will look at how to manage the industrial constraints around employing support workers, and best practice HR approaches to managing change and optimising recruitment and retention in a competitive environment.

Topics covered in the workshop include:

  • Overview of industrial arrangements - awards and agreements
  • Strategic objectives for the support workforce
  • Industrial obstacles and options for managing them
  • Options for employing support workers - casual and permanent
  • Change management
  • Recruitment and retention of employees

After completing the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Review current staff employment arrangements and identify alternative employment structures which provide both greater efficiency for the the business and benefit for employees
  • Understand the pros and cons of various options for flexible working arrangements and be able to recommend the most appropriate option aligned to the organisation's business strategy
  • Make effective operational business decisions which support strategic objectives around competitiveness, financial sustainability and effective people management

Michael has been at Jobs Australia for 14 years, working with not for profit community sector employers including disability services across Australia.

He represented the sector in the SACS equal pay case as well as the current modern award review and is currently negotiating a new agreement for Victorian providers, at a sector level.
