About this event

Join us for our next Citizens For Refuge Ecology (C4RE) Camp on 20-21 August as we record the diversity of mammals at Mount Mellum.

Come roll out your swag under a canopy of stars and help Queensland Trust for Nature (QTFN) build a better understanding of biodiversity values in our state’s AMAZING Nature Refuge network.

This year we are surveying Mount Mellum Nature Refuge, a conservation property 10 minutes from Landsborough in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Novices to experts, students to elders, lone wolves to families, everyone is welcome!

Activities include educational workshops, camera trapping, bioacoustic surveys, learning to use mammal's cryptic traces to find them, all topped off with dinner around the camp fire and spotlighting in the evening.

Citizens for Refuge Ecology (C4RE)

Citizens for Refuge Ecology aims to utilize the power of citizen science to inform conservation activities on Private Nature Refuges throughout Queensland.

Each year we run a series of four camps focusing on a diverse range of organisms including Plants, Mammals, Invertebrates, and Birds.

What is Mammal Muster?

Mammal Muster is a one night, 1.5-day mammal survey focussed on learning about the diversity of mammals on this year's focal property, Mount Mellum Nature Refuge (directions provided upon registration). We will rotate through a set of guided activities led by QTFN and experts.

Attendance at this event includes:

  • Participation in a series of hands-on activities led by experts on the diversity of potential mammals on our focal reserve.
  • Contribution to a year-long program to build a better understanding of biological values on the reserve, which in turn helps guide its conservation.
  • All meals provided in a beautiful rural setting where you can focus on relaxing and getting the most out of your time in the bush.

Key Activities:

Learn the tricks of the trade to find and monitor mammals including:

  • Tracks, scats, and other traces,
  • How to monitor koalas in your own back yard,
  • Camera trapping,
  • Bioacoustic surveys,
  • Nocturnal spotlighting to see what we find
  • Platypus surveys, and how you can contribute to Platypus research. (If you would like to contribute financially, please consider donating towards Platypus eDNA research when you purchase a ticket.
