Event description

Description

Kwaio weavers from Malaita province in the Solomon Islands are visiting the Australian Museum. This workshop is a unique opportunity to learn the ancient artform of weaving armbands, directly from Kwaio men and women, an experience unlike any other.

The armbands known as tokila are worn by both men and women, especially during feasts, dancing and cultural celebrations.

Participants will be able to take their completed Kwaio armband home. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Only 12 spots available!

The Kwaio people who live in the interior of the island of Malaita, Solomon Islands are renowned for retaining strong kastom (tradition) – lost in most parts of the country because of colonisation and modernisation. Many Kwaio follow their traditional ancestral religion, engage in a shell money economy and continue to practice many ancient rituals. They therefore retain significant traditional knowledge.
