Make It New Again: Models for Innovation in Traditional Craft
21-24 November 2012
National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India

The conference explores models for sustainability of traditional crafts in the contemporary world. In particular, it addresses the challenges of increasing the relevance and value of traditional craft practices. It looks at building new thinking around them so as to make the idea of engaging with crafts more appealing to future generations of artisans and craft practitioners.
“Make it New Again” aims to achieve the following:

  • To explore new models for sustaining traditional craft
  • To develop standards of best practice for innovation in traditional craft
  • To provide artisans and designers with new skills in product development
  • To nurture a network of designers, artisans and managers who can work together

The conference welcomes designers, craftspersons, artisans, researchers, NGOs and government. It will consist of a mix of keynotes, panel discussions, workshops, brainstorming sessions and exhibitions.

This event is jointly presented by the Outreach Programmes of the National Institute of Design and the Sangam Project (Australia India Design Platform) - www.sangamproject.net. For more information, email makeitnewagain2012@gmail.com.

Craft Unbound continues the exploration of new developments in contemporary craft, particularly related to the movement of ‘poor craft’. ‘Poor craft’ is used here as a term to describe the creative strategy of using materials that have little or no value. It is a style that has been important in recent Australian contemporary craft, but resonates also with practices elsewhere, particularly in the South.
