Discover the ancient art of kintsugi at Orange Regional Museum

    About this event

Join our beginner's kintsugi class to explore this unique and ancient Japanese art of repairing broken, chipped and cracked pottery using lacquer and gold, led by Sydney-based artisans Jun and Hitomi from Kintsugi Australia. Dating back 500 years, ceramics repaired using Kintsugi are objects of beauty and treasured items.

In this 2.5 hour workshop you’ll learn about the history and philosophy of kintsugi, and use a modernised technique using contemporary materials to repair a broken plate. You’ll go home with your plate, as well as the knowledge to repair your own objects at home.

    Workshop details

    When: Saturday 14 May - 10am-12.30pm OR 2pm-4.30pm

    Cost: $50

This workshop is suitable for adults and interested young adults. All materials are provided, including a broken plate for you to repair.

This workshop also includes an introduction to Orange Regional Museum's exhibition Inherit: old and new histories. We'll explore new objects in the exhibition that share a philosophy with kintsugi as new objects made from old, including a hessian apron made from repurposed CSR Sugar sacks and a wine press crafted from salvaged spare parts.

This class is a rare opportunity to learn kintsugi in the Central West, and we pleased to offer this class at a special price thanks to generous support from the Australian Government’s Culture, Heritage and Arts Regional Tourism (CHART) program.

Please note that this workshop involves use of epoxy glue, and is not recommended for people who have severe asthma, allergies to epoxy glue or who are pregnant.
