Event description
Make a solid sterling silver spoon with master silver smith, Wayne Guest at Studio in the Woods.

About this Event

Wayne Guest’s experience as an educator and master silversmith working with silver and non-precious metals spans well over 30 years. He has exhibited widely, internationally and Australia in over forty exhibitions and has taught silver smithing for more than twenty years at Monash and RMIT Universities. His professional practice attracts commissions ranging from specialised private and church commissions to corporate boardroom centre-pieces. Wayne’s significant contribution to Australian craft is reflected in the representation of his work in numerous public collections most notably the Australian National Gallery, Canberra. The Rusden Foundation Award and a grant from the Australia Council for the Arts are endorsement to Wayne’s status within the contemporary Australian silver smithing domain. Wayne is particularly well known for his large scale, beautiful and technically accomplished hollow ware and like his current work combines silver with stainless steel and copper to create stunning, functional tableware.

In this 2 day workshop Wayne Guest will demonstrate traditional forging, sinking and surface finishing techniques and show you how to work a solid sterling silver bar into a beautifully refined silver spoon.

Ideally you will have some prior experience forging and working with solid silver ingot or bar but it is not essential.

Please wear closed shoes and clothing suited to a workshop environment and bring ear muffs and leather work gloves.

All else will be provided along with a delicious lunch and afternoon tea.

Cost $400 * - maximum of 6 participants

Allow additional $70 (approx) for the cost of sterling silver. Working with copper bar is an option for those with no prior experience, no charge for copper.

Day 1 - Sunday 19/5/19 - 9.30 am to 4 pm

Following introduction, the first day will be a fun day of forging to achieve basic spoon form. Refinement of the handle part of the spoon will be discussed so that participants may explore finer details before the following Sunday.

Day 2 - Sunday 26/5/19 - 9.30 am to 4 pm

Day 2 of this workshop will focus on refining the spoon handle discussed in Day 1. The spoon will be further defined and refined using various traditional surface finishing techniques; planishing, filing, burnishing and polishing.

*This workshop event is being held at a limited introductory price so apologies but there are no refunds
