Make a BeCalm Blanket with Marta Madison

Afternoon workshop - Saturday 24 June, 1.30pm - 4.30pm
$75

BeCalm Blankets provide sensory or tactile stimulation through the use of fabric swatches, coloured objects, textures and the use of simple accessories such as pockets, laces, trims, appliques, buttons, secured beads, ribbons, braids etc. Even small stuffed toys are welcome additions!

This three hour course enriches our community by helping you create and donate to a loved one with dementia. You will learn about the stages of dementia, what causes fidgeting behaviours and how to lay out and construct your BeCalm blanket.

The blankets help calm those with dementia, as they are shown to ease the fidgeting/restlessness that often begins as the disease progresses. The items on the blanket are designed to provide visual and tactile stimulation to the person by incorporating fabrics and objects of different contrasting colours and textures. Auditory input can also be achieved by including objects that make a noise when moved or tapped together (e.g. dangling a few shells together). By creating a lap mat with objects that are familiar and of interest to your loved one, you can personalise their mat and provide an opportunity for reminiscing together.

Marta Madison is an artist, sculptor, felter and illustrator with experience in teaching art those with dementia. She saw a need to create these blankets within the community to assist with those suffering from the effects of dementia. You will be supplied with necessary items to helpcreate your blanket. But do bring items you may think will be meaningful to your loved one with dementia to sew onto the lap mat. Old pillowcases are perfect for this class. She will supply wool batting to place inside to give the case some shape and firmness.

Some sewing skills are necessary. Please bring scissors, thread, buttons, zippers or any items in your craft cupboard.
