Description

Small Streets - Big Vision

Mainstreet SA Study Tours provide our attendees with comprehensive tours of newly redesigned and inspirational streets, precincts and town centres, complete with information about the vision, details of the implementation and practical advice to take away. Our next Study Tour will take us from Adelaide Central Market to the Riverbank, following the Market to Riverbank Link along Pitt Sreet, Bentham Street, Topham Mall, Leigh Street and Bank Street.

A joint project by the City of Adelaide and the State Government (through Renewal SA), the Market to Riverbank Link project involves the upgrade of these small streets and laneways to create an exciting and vibrant connection between the Adelaide Central Market and the Adelaide Riverbank. It has featured an upgrade to elements such as paving, lighting, trees, landscaping, street furniture and public art.

The small streets and laneways that connect the Market District through to the to the city core, Riverbank area and Adelaide Railway Station were identified as a priority for the city and a key driver for the Laneways Master Plan, with the implementation of projects within the Adelaide Riverbank, including the upgrade of Festival Plaza and Station Road.

The laneways in the Link offer a more intimate route for pedestrians and cyclists through paved footpaths, tree canopy, public art, lighting and street furniture. These important connecting streets provide a significant daily route for city users and a hotbed of small bars in the laneway environment.

By introducing ground-level activation and investment opportunities, the streets continue to transform currently under-utilised buildings into a fine-grain tapestry of retail and dining options, interwoven with smaller scale businesses and mixed uses.

Our Study Tour facilitator and guide Michael McKeown, Director of leading design consultancy firm Jensen PLUS, will share his design knowledge as we see first hand the outcomes of this project, speaking with contributiors and collaborators along the way including:

- Jodie Kannane, General Manager, Adelaide Central Market

- Project leads from Adelaide City Council

- Josh Baker, co-founder of Whistle & Flute, Port Admiral Hotel, Pink Moon Saloon, Clever Little Tailor, Larry & Ladd and Coffee Branch

- Andrew Wallace, Adelaide West End Association

- Matt Hunt, Director Riverbank and Strategic Projects, Renewal SA
