This practice-led PhD research project 'Cross cultural encounters in dance imagery' seeks to explore the interface between different perspectives of East and West in dance practice. It focuses on the way imagery is used in Korean traditional dance and in Western somatic contemporary dance, in particular Ideokinesis. The creative outcome of the research, 'Mae Hwa' takes these explorations into a live performance realm.

Central to 'Mae Hwa' is the intersection of Asian forms and philosophies with Western forms and ideas, drawing from Ideokinesis (an approach to improving posture, alignment and fluency of movement through structured guided imagery) and the imagery of Yin Yang, central to Korean traditional dance which in its simplest form means the unity of interconnectedness of opposing elements. 'Mae Hwa' considers the elements of fire, water, wood, metal and earth, the use of metaphor and visualisation to sustain a flow of energy and combines with collaborations with live voice, light and design.
