Journalist and foreign correspondent Madeleine O’Dea has been an eyewitness for over 30 years to the rise of China, the explosion of its contemporary art and cultural scene, and its citizens’ long struggle for free expression. Join her as she visits Waverley to discuss her 2017 Nib Award shortlisted book,The Phoenix Years, a fascinating an accessible account of the birth of modern China and a moving chronicle of decades of courageous political resistance and cultural activism. A vital event for anyone interested in China today.

Benjamin Law is a journalist, columnist, TV screenwriter and author of The Family Law (2010), Gaysia: Adventures in the Queer East (2012) and Quarterly Essay 67: Moral Panic 101. The Family Law is now an AACTA-nominated TV series for SBS which he created and co-writes.
