Higher education post Covid-19: Insights from Deakin’s educational research

About this event

COVID19 has had a significant impact on the Australian higher education sector. In a very short period of time all of the nation’s universities have had to rapidly move to online learning. Deakin’s long history of innovation and leadership in online education places it in a strong position to fully leverage and lead in a post-COVID19 higher education context. In 2020 Deakin established a program of educational research investigating the effects of COVID19 on learning, teaching and assessment at the University. Through a research priority setting activity three areas of work were identified as being important for Deakin’s ongoing transformation of learning and teaching practices into the future. This panel will present on the three projects that explored these areas:

  • Building staff capability in teaching online
  • Belonging and connectedness in higher education
  • Online self-regulated learning

Bio: Dr Joanna Tai: a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University. Her research interests include student experiences of learning and assessment from university to the workplace, peer learning, feedback and assessment literacy, developing capacity for evaluative judgement, and research synthesis. Joanna is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, co-convenor of the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE) Assessment and Measurement SIG, and is Treasurer for the Australian and New Zealand Association for Health Professions Education. Her doctoral work won the Association for Medical Education Europe (AMEE) inaugural PhD prize in 2016. She has a background in medicine and health professions education

Bio: Prof Margaret Bearman: a Research Professor within the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE), Deakin University. She holds a first class honours degree in computer science and a PhD in medical education. Over the course of her career researching higher and clinical education, Margaret has written over 100 publications and regularly publishes in the highest ranked journals in her fields.  Recognition for her work, includes Program Innovation awards from the Australian Office of Learning and Teaching and Simulation Australasia.  Margaret’s interests include: assessment/feedback, digital education, and sociomateriality.

Bio: Dr Rola Ajjawi: Associate Professor at the Centre for Research and Assessment in Digital Learning where she leads a program of research seeking to improve work-based learning experiences and to promote learner success. Her research spans topics including feedback, workplace educational cultures, professional identity and belonging. She has attracted over $2.5million in grant funding and her research is well regarded and cited internationally.

Bio: A/Professor Jaclyn Broadbent is Associate Head of School (Teaching and Learning) in Psychology and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University, and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Jaclyn’s research focuses on self-regulated learning as well as the development, evaluation, and translation of effective teaching strategies to ensure student success. Jaclyn has won several awards for her teaching, including an Australian Award for University Teaching and Deakin University Teacher of the Year.

Bio: A/Professor Barbie Panther is the Director, Teaching Capability in Deakin Learning Futures. She is responsible for recognition and reward programs and building capability for staff in learning and teaching.
