Event Details

This briefing talks about the history of the civil rights movement for people with disability, particularly those with intellectual disability and complex communication barriers, worldwide and in Australia. We discuss the bigger picture and importance of people with disabilities taking control of their own lives, including being in charge of their own care and speaking up for themselves.

This briefing also covers the importance and benefits of providing support to a person with disability around their right to make life decisions, their entitlement to be in control of their own resources and how they are used.

 Lunch included

Advocacy for Inclusion

Advocacy for Inclusion provides independent individual, self and systemic advocacy for people with disabilities.

Advocacy for Inclusion is a Disabled Peoples Organisation which means our board, members and staff are a majority of people with disabilities.

We represent Canberra’s most marginalised and isolated people with disabilities, those with cognitive disabilities and/or significant communication barriers.

We work within a human rights framework and acknowledge the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Advocacy for Inclusion is signed onto the ACT Human Rights Act.
