Description

The Circular Economy with ASPIRE's Cameron McKenzie: Going from 'Take-Make-Waste' to 'Reuse-Recycle-Repurpose'

There’s a new match-making service that started in Victoria that pairs up waste generators with remanufacturers, purchasers or recyclers that can repurpose the waste. It’s got bold national ambitions to build a "circular economy" - a systemic approach to economic development designed to benefit businesses, society, and the environment that is in contrast to the 'take-make-waste' linear model (a circular economy is regenerative by design and aims to gradually decouple growth from the consumption of finite resources).

Pitcher Partners International Institute of Entrepreneurship is delighted to host Cameron McKenzie, CEO of ASPIRE, in a discussion with Adrian Clerici on the circular economy: going from take-make-waste to reuse-recycle-repurpose.

Cameron is an alumnus of Swinburne University of Technology's Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation, Master of Business Administration, and Master of Science postgraduate programs. He worked as a tradesman before realising that business as usual and walking between the lines were not generating the impacts he believed businesses needed.

Founding his first business at age 20 - a common trait in the family - Cameron went on to be a multi-state manager of a commercial HVAC & facility management company. Identifying important gaps in his knowledge, Cameron undertook a double master degree at Swinburne that took him to Switzerland on a scholarship to study international entrepreneurship and finance. Discovering a passion for sustainability and impact, Cameron was subsequently appointed CEO of ASPIRE, an award-winning and successful platform developed by CSIRO and Data61.

ASPIRE is an online marketplace that intelligently matches businesses with potential manufacturers, buyers or recyclers of excess resources and waste products, in the process helping build a robust circular economy. ASPIRE is ready to scale across the country for anyone and everyone who wants to build sustainable business models.

In 2019 ASPIRE took out the prestigious Australian Technologies Competition (Circular Economy category) and was a runner up in the world's longest-standing sustainably awards, The Banksia Awards. The ASPIRE platform is ready to make the biggest impact possible.

This will be a moderated conversation supported by Pitcher Partners. We welcome you to join in and contribute to the discussion.

A light lunch and refreshments will be provided from 12:15pm for a 12:30pm start.
