Online event

Overview

Body Stigma Impacts on Wellbeing is delivered as part of the Loddon Mallee Public Health Unit’s Wellbeing Lunch and Learn Series.

Overview

Body image concerns are common and, on their own, are not classified as mental health problems. However, they can significantly contribute to mental health challenges. Research shows that higher levels of body dissatisfaction are associated with lower quality of life, increased psychological distress, and unhealthy eating behaviours.

Recent research indicates that:

  • 20% of adults regularly feel shame about their bodies
  • 34% report feeling down about their bodies
  • 19% experience feelings of disgust towards their bodies

This session will explore the impact of body image on wellbeing, including weight stigma, disordered eating, and weight-loss practices. An expert speaker will share evidence-based insights, alongside lived and living experience contributors who will discuss the real-world effects of body image concerns and stigma on individuals and communities.

What you’ll learn

Participants will be supported to:

  • Understand how body image influences individual and community wellbeing
  • Gain insights into practical changes and supports that can improve body image within wellbeing-focused settings
  • Learn from lived and living experience perspectives on how negative body image and stigma affect people and communities
  • Access relevant resources to support continued learning and practice

Interactive Q&A

The session includes a facilitated Q&A panel, with opportunities to submit questions in advance or during the webinar. Participants can explore real-world concerns, share experiences, and discuss how body image and weight stigma affect mental wellbeing in individuals and communities.
