In this Cup-eve talk, Andrew Lemon will canvass the perennial appeal of the Melbourne Cup.

About this event

Cup Week and the Melbourne Cup have long been embedded in Australian cultural, social and political history. Why Melbourne, why the Cup, and how does it still exert a particular hold? There have always been those who reviled horse racing in general and Cup Week in particular. Most Melburnians and indeed most Australians still welcome the First Tuesday in November. In this Cup-eve talk, Andrew Lemon will canvass the perennial appeal of the Cup throughout the vicissitudes of Australia’s history from the days of Burke and Wills in1861 to the Covid Cup of 2020, and what it tells us of our national character.

About the Speaker Dr Andrew Lemon AM, FRHSV:

Professional historian Andrew Lemon over two decades wrote the epic three volume The History of Australian Thoroughbred Racing (Hardie Grant Books, 2008), chiefly illustrated by former State Artist, the late Harold Freedman. Volume Three was the joint winner of the biennial Australian Society for Sports History book award. He is consultant historian to the Victoria Racing Club.

A past president of the Royal Historical Society of Victoria, in 2012 Andrew held a John H. Daniels Research Fellowship at the National Sporting Library and Museum in Virginia, USA. He is the author of many award winning and commended books on Australian history and biography. Publication of his historical novel The Pebbled Beach at Pentecost is imminent.
