Event description

Description

Did you know native mistletoe occurs in trees throughout the city? Fascinated by the weird and wonderful?

Come and listen to talks by renowned scientists and communicators, Professor Tim Entwisle and Professor David M. Watson, as well as hear experiences from the City of Melbourne’s Urban Forest and Ecology team, to learn the unique stories of Nature in the City.

Professor David M. Watson from Charles Sturt University, will be talking about the fascinating ecological role of mistletoe; as well as its potential use for novel ecosystem services in urban landscapes.

Professor Tim Entwisle, Director and Chief Executive of Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria, will be discussing some bizarre botanical beasts from Mexico.

The City of Melbourne’s Urban Forest and Ecology team will discuss surprising discoveries of nature in the city.

These talks are part of a promotion called "Look up & Pucker Up" where we're building on the Christmas (in July!) tradition of kissing under the mistletoe to encourage people in the city to look around them and appreciate the surprising places that nature occurs around the city.

Our city is home to a number of native Creeping Mistletoe plants, that hide amongst the foliage and provide nectar and habitat for birds and butterflies.

From 16 July until 23 July, a number of signs will be placed on London Plane trees in the central city – try your luck at spotting the mistletoe.

What time does it start: Presentation will start at 6:30 PM, doors open at 6 PM. Non-alcholic drinks and nibbles will be provided.

The venue: Donkey Wheel House, 673 Bourke st, Melbourne. Level 2.

How to get there: Public Transport (Trams: Bourke St - 86, 96, Collins St - 11, 12, 48, 109. Trains: Southern Cross Station), Bicycle, or walk! Please note this is a heritage building so if you have special access needs, please get in touch.
