Event description
An industry-wide charrette to rethink the future of senior living design.

About this Event

From aged care homes and retirement villages to…...what?

What will living look like as a person aged over 65 in 2050?

If you're passionate about challenging ‘sixtyfive-ism’ and changing the way we currently design communities and buildings for life in later years, join us for Longevity by Design.

Longevity by Design is a charrette, or design challenge, that will be held in Brisbane over one day on 6 February 2020. It's a joint initiative of The University of Queensland 's Healthy Ageing Initiative and DMA Engineers, with support from our event partners Paynters and Redland City Council.

Facilitated by Dr Rosemary Kennedy, the charrette will bring together thought leaders and professionals across a broad range of industries involved in designing for later life, building on the foundations of the University of Queensland’s Healthy Ageing Initiative.

Registered teams will take on a design challenge set in the Redlands. Teams will have a choice of three sites to work on, where they will be challenged to create visionary, innovative and highly connected design to meet the needs of future seniors in 2050.

For more information about the charrette, visit www.longevitybydesign.co

What is a charrette?

A charrette is a workshop devoted to solving a design challenge around a particular topic or situation. It is a collaboration to generate ideas and innovative thinking.

Why join the Longevity by Design charrette?

The charrette is a collaborative event giving teams the chance to think innovatively about their vision for the future of over-65 living.

It’s an opportunity to build your personal brand as a designer, innovator or creative thinker and make new professional connections across a range of industries.

You’ll hear from leading academics, interact with and be challenged by some incredible industry experts and mentors, and have your ideas heard by some of the leaders in Australian senior living.

Who can attend?

We’re looking for a diverse mix of skills, genders, ages, backgrounds and experience within each team.

Teams will consist of between 4-8 people, with a maximum of 80 people participating on the day. We invite you to register as an individual, or as a team.

If registering as an individual, we will place you into a team.

If you are registering as a team, we strongly encourage you to bring together a diverse team with a range of different skills, perspectives and viewpoints to encourage creativity and innovation. Why not invite some clients or stakeholders to join your own organisation's team?

We're expecting participation from architects, transport and urban planners, and engineers, to interior designers, social scientists, health and community practitioners, educators, psychologists, visual artists, builders, marketers, built environment professionals and representatives from Government.

If you're keen to challenge assumptions and think differently when it comes to changing senior living design for the future, we'd love you to join us.

Who will you hear from?

There will be a series of provocations from thought leaders to inspire imagination and innovation. These will include:

- Professor Laurie Buys, leader of the Healthy Ageing Initiative.

- Everald Compton, Chairman of Longevity Alliance Australia, and Founder of National Seniors Australia.

- Professor John Mangan, Professor of Economics, University of Queensland.

- Dr Bridget Burdett, Principal Researcher, MRCagney on transport, mobility and access.

The Pitches, Awards and Judges

The charrette will culminate in pitches by each team at a breakfast event on 27 February 2020 at Union College, UQ for up to 150 attendees.

This forum will be an open event where teams can invite colleagues and clients, and it will be attended by range of aged care and retirement industry representatives connected to the HAI as well as Redland City Council.

Teams will be vying for a range of incentives including:

  • The UQ Healthy Ageing Initiative Award, which includes the opportunity to work with the team from the HAI to have your work published.
  • The Redland City Council Award, which includes the opportunity to present your ideas to a group of experts and practitioners at a future Redland City Council health care and social assistance forum.
  • The People's Choice Award, with your idea selected as the most innovative and impactful by all event attendees on the day.

We've put together an amazing panel of judges to judge the UQ HIA and Redland City Council Awards, including:

  • Marcus Riley: CEO, Ballycara
  • Jill Wiese: General Manager Metro South, Blue Care
  • Jason Eldering: CEO, Southern Cross Care Queensland
  • Andrew Chesterman: CEO, Redland City Council
  • Dr Scott Bourke: Director, Innovation & City Transformation, Logan City Council
  • Dy Currie: Chief Planner, Brisbane City Council
  • James Mantis: General Manager - Property Development & Asset Management, Bolton Clarke
