Event description
A scenic walk to visit London Bridge and Homestead, places with a far away feel.

About this event

Less than 200 years ago, in 1823, the first European was guided to this natural bridge on the upper reaches of the Queanbeyan River by an Aboriginal guide. The area lies on an Aboriginal pathway used to gain access to the higher country. Later, in 1857 an Irishman from County Clare purchased land nearby, and his family gradually expanded their holding and owned the London Bridge property until 1920. Join Linda Roberts and Trevor Lipscombe and find out more about this pioneer family and the series of houses that they built over the years that make up the homestead. We will also visit the London Bridge Woolshed and Shearers Quarters. This scenic area still has a remote feel and it is easy to imagine life there long ago. A walk of about 4km on dirt tracks with some hills.

Meet: Car park at the end of London Bridge Road, 21km south of Queanbeyan via Old Cooma Road and Burra Road. Allow one hour from central Canberra.

Walk Leader:  Trevor Lipscombe and Linda Roberts

Bad weather:  Unless otherwise advised by email, we will be at the meeting point where a decision will be made as to whether to proceed or postpone.

Note:  For the comfort and safety of other walkers, we do not allow dogs on our walks.

Audio tour guide system: we will be using our new audio tour guide system to help the hard of hearing and to assist in physical distancing. We have two types of earphones - one fits over the ear (not in) and the other over the head. You are welcome to bring your own earphones (with a normal phone jack ie not an Apple lightning connector). The receivers and earphone will be sanitised and you will also be asked to use hand sanitiser before use. The use of the system is optional.

COVID-19 safety: Please check the current ACT health guidelines on protecting yourself and others before booking on this walk. Please note that you must cancel if you are unwell (a refund will be provided on request); you should maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres from other people during the walk and observe good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs. If required, your contact details will be provided to health authorities. For this reason, we are now asking for your phone number. Hand sanitiser will be available before and during the Walk.

Refund Policy: If cancelled more than 7 days prior to the date, a full* refund will be given. Heritage Walks are booked via Eventbrite and can be cancelled via Eventbrite.

If cancelled within 7 days of the event and the place can be filled or if there are exceptional circumstances, a full* refund will be given. (For Heritage Walks, requests should be made to heritagewalksact@gmail.com.)

*If booked online the service providers may withhold their fees.

Note that we have resumed the previous policy for refunds after the change to one day because of COVID. As we regularly have a waiting list for Walks, we appreciate early notice of cancellation is appreciated so we can offer places to those on the waiting list.
