Event description

Description

'Reid’s raid' is a true story set in a desert area of South Africa during the late 19th century. History recorded the event but with very little detail.

Join local author Wayne Barrie as he discusses his research that uncovered unbelievable coincidences to Anzac day. The Anzac spirit is more than evident 14 years before the beaches are stormed at Gallipoli and the parallels do not stop there. The story also talks about the Boer war which provides a background to the state of play over a hundred years ago when field messages were passed using Morse code with a flashing mirror.

An old man’s request from 1954 brings another human insight to the story as Wayne tracks down the answers that he never got. These elements are woven together to bring the heroic event to light. With three gallantry awards accorded, an Aussie bluff, a con and a heap of Anzac Spirit 14 years to the moment before Anzac day, make one hell of an Aussie tale.

Wayne will present images and memorabilia from the Boer War and will deliver an entertaining disposition of what happened 117 years ago, when 22 men on a particular day, at a particular time, carried out a particular action.

Finally, the circumstances of how each quote, each photograph and each piece of memorabilia unfolded are revealed as are the trials and tribulations endured and the puzzles that had to be unravelled to get to the truth.
