Over one weekend, gain a toolkit of techniques to strengthen your writerly voice and vision.

For writers of fiction and non-fiction, this weekend seminar will help you find joy and freedom in your writing. Using unique methods developed over many years, acclaimed writer and mentor Kathryn Heyman will give you tips and techniques, to help you discover new elements of character voice and approaches to voice for your novel or memoir. You will finish the seminar with a stronger sense of your writerly voice and vision, a toolkit of techniques to discover new elements in your writing, and the confidence to go forward. There will be the opportunity to ask questions.

Learning Outcomes:

Through practical exercises and group discussions you will learn:

  • How to discover, deepen, and develop your writing voice
  • The right questions to ask of a creative project
  • How to break writerly habits (and find new ones) and discover a new voice
  • How to develop character voice
  • Techniques to marry form and content, so that the voice you write in is the truest one for your subject

About Kathryn

Dr Kathryn Heyman's sixth novel, Storm and Grace, was published to critical acclaim in 2017. She has written several radio dramas for the BBC, including adaptations of her own fiction and in 2018 was the CAL Author Fellow. Her previous work has won the Wingate, Southern Arts and Arts Council of England Writing Awards in the UK and been nominated for awards including the Scottish Writer of the Year, the Orange Prize (now the Baileys) and the Kibble Prize and the West Australian Premier’s Literary Awards. Her seventh book, the memoir Fury, will be published in 2021 in Australia and the UK.

Kathryn is the director of the Australian Writers Mentoring Program and has helped scores of writers move from idea to publication.

How to Connect to the Seminar:

When you buy a ticket, your name and email will be registered for the event. Throughout the week of the event and on the day of the event our Queensland Writers Centre team member will send you a link to ensure that you connect with the seminar. This will be sent straight to your inbox - it is also advised to check your junk inbox in case nothing has come through.

It is only through this link in which you may access the seminar, so it is important that you check that you have received it. In case you misplace this email, you will receive another email with the seminar link 10 minutes before the course is scheduled to start. If you don't receive the email before the event, contact us at admin@qldwriters.org.au.


Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

Unless otherwise stated, Queensland Writers Centre workshops and events are suitable for participants aged 16 years and over. If you are under 18 years of age, please check with us for suitability before purchasing a ticket.

Can I ask the instructor questions as a live stream viewer?

This seminar will be run by Kathryn Heyman - she will provide you with breakout rooms which will give you the opportunity to discuss the seminar with other participants. Opportunities to speak with Kathryn will be limited throughout the seminar.

What should prepare for the event?

We suggest having either a pen and paper or electronic note-taking device as you watch the seminar.

How do I access the event?

During the week of the event - and on the day of the event - the link to join Kathryn Heyman's seminar will be emailed out to all participants. Click on the link that is provided and you'll be able to join the seminar.

Can I playback the live stream after the event has happened?

This seminar is a one off event that can't be accessed after the day.

What am I allowed to say in the group chat?

This one time event will be offered through Zoom as a seminar and limited ability to talk during the workshop. You'll be able to chat with your group once you're directed into breakout rooms - this will be facilitated by Kathryn Heyman.

How do I improve the video quality of my live stream?

All seminars through Zoom are offered in the highest quality.

What internet browser should I use?

Please ensure the Zoom app is downloaded before the event. If you don't have the application downloaded on your tablet, device, or computer, the stream can be played through any internet browser.
