PRESENTER: Lucia Smith, Speech Pathologist BSPPath MSPA CPSP

Lucia has been a speech pathologist for over 23 years. She works in schools and preschools and is the author of SPELL SIGNS and the SPEECH SOUND SET.

She has a passion for assisting students with low literacy.



  • Evidence-based methods for teaching literacy
  • Creating a strong foundation for literacy learning – VITALS in the first year of school
  • Year 2 and beyond – VITALS when moving on from the basics
  • The building blocks of reading and spelling – phonological awareness, phonics, letter-sound links (the alphabetic principle), morphology, orthography. Making sure all teachers are familiar with each area and why they are VITAL!
  • Common difficulties that students encounter, recognising areas of difficulty, planning intervention
  • Early identification of “dyslexia”, what dyslexia IS, what dyslexia IS NOT! How to help.
  • The Victorian Curriculum, the Australian Curriculum and how Spell Signs works in with the Learning Goals and Achievement Standards
  • Learn to use the SPELL SIGNS system (This system can work in with any phonics program or in isolation and assists in learning about the building blocks of reading and spelling including phonological awareness, phonics, morphology, orthography). A two-page outline of the system is provided free on the day, or participants may pre-order and pick up the resource at a heavily discounted price on the day.

This training is only available Speech Pathologists and teaching staff (not ES).  Registrations will be limited to 50 attendees.
