Event description
Join us at Taperoo Beach and be guided through activities to help listen to and see our landscape with new eyes.

About this Event

Do you want to connect more deeply with the land that sustains us?

What does it FEEL like to really listen to a place?

What can we observe when we stop and really pay attention to our surrounds?

Meet the landscape of the Taperoo dunes, listen to the quiet forces that create our coastal landforms. Meet the different plants and animals that help shape the land and fill it with its special character. Record the landscape around you, using not much more than your five senses and pencil and paper.

This workshop will help you to listen to and see anew the landscape you are within.

Be guided by local ecologist and artist, Peri Coleman, through three activities:

  • Become centred in the place by listening and creating a sound map
  • Measure and note how you fit into the immediate landscape
  • Observe and capture how everything has it's place in our environment, from the shoreline and through the dunes

This is a small group session and numbers are very limited.

This sessions is suitable for everyone who would like to observe, record and experience our local landscape in a new way. Children must be accompanied by a guardian, be appropriately supervised at all times and will require their own ticket.

BYO small blank drawing pad and pencil, hat, sunscreen and water bottle.

Participants may like to bring a towel or mat to sit on. You may also like to bring along a pair of binoculars, if you use them, and a phone camera. Other basic measuring equipment will be provided.

This is an outdoor event and participants need to wear appropriate clothing and footware to safely explore the beach and sanddune environment. Please dress for the weather.

We recommend enclosed shoes as snakes live in the dunes and appropriate sun protection (hat, sunscreen, long sleaves).

Meeting spot: the beachfront car park on Lady Gowrie Drive in front of the old police academy at Taperoo (just north of Strathfield Terrace). Join us at the top of the "painted dragon steps". Look for the blue Port Environment Centre flag.

Please note that there are no toilet facilities at the meeting point. The nearest public toilets are at Roy Martin Reserve (a 10 minute walk or 5 minute drive away).

The Port Environment Centre is supported by the Adelaide Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resource Management Board.
