Session overview

The workshop is suitable for CHSP funded volunteers and staff and is designed to give participants who find themselves in the role of an accidental counsellor, the strategies to enable them to effectively listen and respond to clients in a respectful, empathic manner whilst maintaining professional boundaries.

 

What’s covered

Participants will gain knowledge, understanding and skills in:

  • Listening & responding: includes engaging, attending and demonstrating empathy within boundaries.
  • Use of encouragers, paraphrasing & questions.
  • Summarizing and closing conversations.

This workshop is interactive and there will be many opportunities to develop and practice your skills!

 

Who should participate

Access to this training is given to staff and volunteers currently working in Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) funded services located in the local government areas of: The City of Sydney, Woollhara, Waverley, Randwick and Bayside.   

 

How do I get there? 

There are a number of different transport options for you to choose from depending upon your departure point.  

  • Trains: Bondi Junction Train station is located 5 minutes walk (300 metres) away from the Mill Hill Centre.  Trains on this line are T4 Eastern Suburbs & Illawarra lines. 
  • Available bus routes: M40, 200, 313, 314, 316, 317, 326, 327, 328, 352, 353, 355, 357, 360, 380, 381, 386, 387, 388, 400, 400N.
  • Driving: metered on street parking is available or use the car park in the Eastgate Shopping Centre, Ebley Street, Bondi Junction - located 1 block away from the training venue.

About the facilitator

 

Deb Helmrich is an experienced and accredited trainer and qualified Social Worker. Deb applies her extensive experience in the Aged and Disability Sector to all of her training, drawing on scenarios and anecdotes to create an inclusive and relevant training experience. Currently employed with the STARS Training Team, Deb is also an active member of the Southern Sydney Connection with VAST and 3Bridges.

VAST provides face to face courses, managers' breakfasts, volunteer training, customised training opportunities, including our highly sought after, "Tailored for Tomorrow" program. 

VAST is part of the Southern Sydney Connection partnership with 3Bridges and STARS and is a programme of The Junction Neighbourhood Centre.
