Event description

Description

This course builds on participants' existing crisis support skills to allow them to deliver disaster relief services in the aftermath of a significant community event.

PFA is an essential component of the training necessary for any person seeking to become a Crisis Support Officer (CSO). The role of a CSO is to provide human-social support to people affected by a disaster.

A certificate of attendance will be issued however, participants must complete the entire days' training in full. It is important that no content be missed. It is strongly recommended to clear other commitments for the training day in advance.

Psychological First Aid is support that is given:

  • To someone immediately following a disaster or critical event;
  • Until more appropriate professional help is available; and/or
  • Until the person is less overwhelmed and more able to cope.

Psychological First Aid seeks to:

  • Reduce the initial distress
  • Foster short and long-term adaptive functioning (build resilience)
  • Minimise the risk of further harm

Prerequisites*:

Participants should have training and experience in supporting people during times of crisis.
