Event description
Our award winning Mentors are coming to NSW South Coas, with heaps of lived knowledge and skills to listen and share ideas with deaf teens.

About this Event

Introducing the 2019 Life Goals & Skills Blast for Wollongong!

(Inclusive of South Coast area)

This is the condensed version of our flagship Life Goals & Skills Program so instead of 4 separate sessions over 4 months, we are running it over one weekend!

Why should teenagers with a hearing loss attend?

  • You want to meet our legendary Mentors, who have a hearing loss just like you, and more importantly "get it". 90% of our Mentors speak and have a life long use of their Hearing aids or Cochlear Implants - they know what it's like when the battery goes flat!
  • You feel confused or have "lots of questions" about your NDIS, your plan, or simply have ideas or views you want to bounce off with our experienced Mentors.
  • You are finding being a deaf teenager a little (or very) frustrating, and need a safe place where you can share frustrations, gain ideas, or simply work out plans to improve an area of your life at school, at your hobby, within your family, or just with anyone.
  • You want to hang out with like minded and ear minded people who "get you" for the weekend.
  • BONUS: We will be running a Parent Seminar on Saturday for parents

  • Phonak Sound Field System and Live Captioning available

Note: If you are on the NDIS, you may be able to use your funding to pay for the program costs.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This is for current deaf or hard of hearing High School students (Year 7 to Year 12).  The teenagers will be grouped with peers from the same year group as them.

I live outside of the Wollongong region but I would really like to attend this Blast. Can I do so?

Yes, of course! Any deaf or hard of hearing teenager is most welcome to enrol in the Blast :)

What is the mentor to participant ratio?

Every teenager gets grouped into their year group (7&8, 9&10, 11&12) and each year group will have 2 mentors (1 male and 1 female). The maximum ratio is 1 mentor to 4 participants.

The ticket says it is for 'One deaf/hard of hearing teenager', does this mean I have to purchase a separate tickets for myself (parent) and siblings?

No, if you and your other children wish to accompany your deaf/hard of hearing teenager to the Parent Seminar, you are welcome to do so at no extra cost.

Why the registration fee?

The usual fee to secure your teenager's enrolment is $100 but there is an EARLYBIRD OFFER of $50

The full cost of the weekend Blast is $950 - the remaining balance of $850 can be paid in the following ways:

  • Personal payment upfront
  • Through your NDIS plan/funding if you are registered (please contact us as this is determined by the number of NDIS hours needed)
  • If you are unable to pay this due to financial hardship, you can apply to be part of our Community Fundraising Program where we will work to fundraise this shortfall through your local community clubs e.g. RSLs, Rotary, Lions, Apex, etc

Can I use my current NDIS funding to cover Hear For You?

Yes this is possible. During registration for the NDIS ticket, please fill out the required information so we know if you are:

  1. NDIA Managed i.e. they pay all providers on your behalf

  2. Self-Managed i.e. the NDIA will give you the funds so you can pay your providers directly

  3. Plan-Managed i.e. the NDIA will give you funding in order to pay for a Plan Manager who will pay your providers on your behalf

You will need to give us your NDIS number and the number of hours or funding amount that you have secured with your NDIA planner.

Which Support Clusters do I use or apply for to cover Hear For You events?
