Event Details

As the mainstream media rapidly slides into the hectoring and patronising space formerly occupied exclusively by tabloids, and the internet gets noisier, the need for considered, measured analysis of political and social issues remains. In this environment the role of the mainstream and periphery are being redefined. The challenge remains: how to create the time and space to consider significant trends and issues; how to engage critically, but not dogmatically, with the problems of the day; how to be heard above the shouting.

Now celebrating its tenth anniversary, Griffith REVIEW was established by Griffith University to address the concern that universities were failing in their mission to provide public intellectual leadership, and failing to make the intellectual and creative insights of writers and thinkers available to a broad public.

In its first decade Griffith REVIEW has changed the public intellectual landscape in Australia. It has published nearly 700 authors and four million words, and been the starting point for at least 70 books. Even though the internet has changed the way we communicate and share ideas and insights, there is still a hunger for quality writing that explores complex subjects with flair and insight.

Founding editor of Griffith REVIEW, Julianne Schultz, will explain how ideas develop and circulate in this new noisy world and where people are turning for critical engagement with the issues that matter.

Following the speech, Julianne Schultz will join Glyn Davis, Vice Chancellor and President of University of Melbourne, who advocated the creation of Griffith REVIEW as Griffith's Vice Chancellor, and author Maria Tumarkin for a discussion lead by Mary Delahunty about the place of writing and reading and thought leadership.
