Description

One of the joys of running a letterpress studio is to share the collection and allow others to use the archive of typographic material and printing equipment. The Bacon Factory in Eagle Farm Brisbane hosts regular workshop sessions for individuals or entire teams.

The letterpress session kicks off with a historical introduction to letterpress and the typographic measurement system. This is followed by a tour through the workspace. Participants become acquainted with our woodtype and metal type collection along with the assortment of vinatage print related items in the collection. Participants will be introduced to the multipul styles of printing presses and their technical details. This course will give participants the knowledge and confident to operate a press by themselves at the conclusion of the workshop. This workshop qualifies students to hire the studio and equipment on our Wednesday afternoon/evening Open Access Sessions.

This one day letterpress workshop will introduce you to the terminology, tools and basics of letterpress. You will learn about traditional movable type, furniture, spacing, leading and the techniques required to lockup an original letterpress forme. You will set traditional type to create an original letterpress forme that incorporates advertising cuts from the vast collection within the Bacon Factory archive. The afternoon will conclude with printing your creation on one of the many presses from a 1840's Columbian iron hand press through to the numerous proof presses such as the vandercook and poco proof presses.
