Description

Let’s write a story – together

7 week course in creative writing with Dr Alan Hancock

Seven Thursday evenings 8 March to 26 April 2018 (no class on 29 March)

Course fee: $98 (includes materials) Bookings: Cherie Cable 08 9411 3848 ccable@cockburn.wa.gov.au

Maybe you’ve already done one of Alan Hancock’s creative writing courses. Maybe you just want to write, and learn how to write better. Either way, this is the course for you. And it’s a bit different.

We’ll work as a group to create images, moments, and characters that we will weave together into a bigger story. Think patchwork quilt made of chapters. We’ll write alone, and together. We’ll look at the work of some top authors, and see what we can learn from them about story making. And we’ll learn the essentials of editing.

What will our book be about? Come along and find out - and have your say in how it takes shape. How will it work? Alan will set writing exercises and provide structures. He will organise and guide some collaborative creativity. And he will work in the role of editor to shape the output from all these activities.

We could create a text that people can read online, or a print copy. It all depends on what everyone wants.

Dr Alan Hancock is a prize-winning writer whose work has been produced by the ABC and BBC, and published in Australia and internationally. He has worked on many successful collaborative script-writing projects that have resulted in stage shows and radio plays.

In this course he will apply to fiction writing tried and tested processes that work in script-writing teams. His doctoral studies focused on the practical side of collaborative creativity. So he’s thought all this through and put together an approach that works.

You don’t need a lot of experience or previous knowledge. But you do need to be ready to engage with other people, learn some new writing skills, and take a step into the unknown. We’ll write a lot. We’ll learn a lot. And it should fun.
