Description

As educators we have all encountered students with disabilities in our teaching context. As the rate of disability diagnosis increases, it brings with it a range of complex legal, ethical and emotional issues. The professional challenges faced by educators include managing challenging behaviours, dealing with the complexity of inclusion and collaborating with parents. Recent reports reveal concern over how students with disabilities are supported and parents are critical of a system that needs improvement. This workshop outlines the legal and professional obligations faced by educators through the Disability Standards for Education and how to translate these into effective teaching practice through the negotiated education plan.

The following topics are included in the presentation:

  • The Individual Education Planning process

  • Case studies

  • The importance of collaborating with caregivers

The information in this workshop is designed to provide general information only. It does not replace legal advice from a qualified legal representative.
