Event description
Learn@Lunch with Professor Jan Breckenridge | Addressing financial abuse in domestic violence contexts

About this Event

Nationally, one in six women and one in fourteen men report being victims of financial abuse. Domestic and family violence are not limited to the physical realm, with financial abuse prevalent in intimate relationships, although older people and people living with disability are also vulnerable. Perpetrators use financial abuse to control, exploit and sabotage another person, and they can strike well after the victim has left the relationship. Perpetration of financial abuse can stop people having any agency over how they manage their lives and severely limit opportunity and wellbeing.

At our next virtual Learn@Lunch, Professor Jan Breckenridge, Head of the School of Social Sciences and Co-Convener of the Gendered Violence Research Network at UNSW Sydney, will explore financial abuse in a domestic violence context. Professor Breckenridge’s reputation is well established, having undertaken extensive work, research and evaluation in the areas of trauma, domestic and sexual violence, gender issues and child abuse since 1986.

In her talk, Professor Breckenridge will discuss responses to perpetrators of financial abuse, and unpack her work on ‘Gendered Violence and Organisations’, which provides expert advice to government and organisations. This includes best practice policies and responses to employees and customers affected by domestic and family violence, sexual assault and sexual harassment.
