Fighting fire with fire: Addressing our growing wildfire threat

It’s common knowledge that wildfires can manifest at an extraordinary speed; even giving rise to the popular expression that a fast-moving entity ‘spreads like wildfire’. Under the effects of climate change, however, both the frequency and intensity of wildfires are rapidly escalating, causing them to become unpredictable, with devastating effects. In Australia, the average cost of bushfire damage is $330 million per year, while catastrophic firestorms like Black Saturday in 2009 cost 73 lives and around $4.4 billion, with ongoing detrimental impacts on the environment and society. What’s worse, these destructive events are now occurring up to three times more often than a century ago, with Australia experiencing more than 50 firestorms since 2000.

At our next Learn@Lunch session, Associate Professor Jason Sharples will unpack how UNSW’s critical research in bushfire dynamics is helping us to regain control over our growing wildfire threat. He will explain how, by tracking firestorms as they occur, he and his team have been able to develop new tools and approaches to predicting and preventing fires, and informing more effective management of our natural resources and emergency response.
