Description

LEADING IN COMMUNITY

Lesley Shuttleworth and Jacques Boulet

As the wisdom of our ‘business as usual’ approaches to running our organisations has been questioned for a long time, it is somehow surprising that leadership in its traditional hierarchical form has not been questioned and challenged more widely and more fundamentally. During the latter part of the last century, community organisations were actively encouraged - even not-so-gently nudged - to conduct their affairs in a more ‘businesslike manner’ and to impose hierarchical leadership and structures, especially reinforced by the associated economic rationalist or neo-liberal ideologies and policies. Unsurprisingly, many now question concepts like ‘community management’ squeezed into strategic and operational frameworks which feel unnatural and antagonistic to the sector’s principles and values, including its commitments to equality, social justice and collaboration.

We will interrogate this largely imposed ‘model’ arguing that appropriate and effective leadership in and alongside communities requires a radical rethink. We question the assumption that there is a model or formula to follow (especially those approaches termed ‘best practice’) and we are more interested in emergent and evolutionary conceptual and operational frameworks which fit the specific context in which they are supposed to ‘work’.

We will explore the complementary linkages between distributive leadership, participatory action research, built-in evaluation and reflection, principle-centeredness and the ‘learning organisation’ and other relevant concepts. We invite you to explore, in conversation, how the subtle interplay of a variety of theories and practices can more fully engage people in their communities to become responsible ( and response-able) leaders in their own right.
