About this Event
In May 2020 the European Union (EU) adopted its new Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, as part of the EU Green Deal. The current strategy builds on the previous strategy (2011-2020) and existing legislation (such as the main biodiversity laws in the EU, the Birds and Habitats Directives). In spite of the legal frameworks and strategies, many habitats and species in the EU are in an unfavourable conservation status. The new biodiversity strategy has as aim to step up the protection and restoration of nature, including commitments such as protecting at least 30% of land and sea and to develop a legally binding framework for restoration. The strategy is also aimed as contribution to the post 2020 Biodiversity Framework, that is currently under preparation for the next Conference of Parties of the Biodiversity Convention.
