Description

For the next edition of Writers & Readers at our Carlton branch, Melbourne-based author Laura-Elizabeth Woollett will discuss her latest novel – “Beautiful Revolutionary” with Programming manager, Veronica Sullivan from the Wheeler Centre.

Meticulously researched, elegantly written, and utterly engrossing, Beautiful Revolutionary explores the allure of the real-life charismatic leader, reverend Jim Jones who would destroy so many. In masterful prose, Woollett painstakingly examines what happens when Evelyn is pulled into Jones’s orbit — an orbit it would prove impossible for her to leave.

Laura Elizabeth Woollett is the author of The Love of a Bad Man (Scribe, 2016), a short story collection about the wives and girlfriends of notorious bad men from history. It was shortlisted for the 2017 Victorian Premier's Award for Fiction and the Ned Kelly Award for Best First Fiction. Her new novel Beautiful Revolutionary (Scribe, 2018) follows a young couple who join Jim Jones' Peoples Temple in late '60s California. Her writing has appeared in Elle, The Guardian, and Kill Your Darlings, among others. She lives in Melbourne.

Veronica Sullivan is the Programming Manager at the Wheeler Centre. She co-hosts Sisteria, a podcast about women’s experiences as creators and consumers of arts and culture, and is on the board of the Feminist Writers Festival. Her writing has been published by the Guardian, Overland, The Lifted Brow, Kill Your Darlings and others.
