Event description

Description

You are invited to join us to celebrate Westerly's first print issue for 2017!

This diverse collection of work from 50 authors includes the voices of Fay Zwicky, Peter Rose, John Kinsella and the emerging writers from our 2016 Writers' Development Program. Issue 62.1 has no special focus or theme—as is often the case with our general issues—but common threads emerge nevertheless. Many of the works selected for issue 62.1 are concerned with ‘responding to the wrongs of the world’.

It is interesting to contemplate how this theme correlates with the high proportion of female representation. Westerly 62.1 features 73% of work by female writers, the highest concentration of female authorship the Magazine has seen in over a decade! Without a doubt, these figures are worth celebrating. All of the pieces selected for publication in Westerly are the result of a blind selection process, which we believe is important for creating a balanced, representative discussion of literature and culture. We see Westerly as a vehicle for thoughtful writing by people of all genders and backgrounds, and we believe that our receptiveness to all stories and responses is the most valuable tool we have for building a culture that benefits everyone.

With the release of Issue 62.1, we would like to celebrate some of the exciting changes happening at the Westerly office. We will be taking the opportunity to introduce our new Associate Editor, and launching the 2017 Writers' Development Program.

The issue will be officially launched by Kent Anderson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Community and Engagement) of the University of Western Australia, at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. Light refreshments will be provided.

Admission is free, but tickets are limited so RSVP is essential.
