The 3Ai Institute

The collection of technologies we are currently calling artificial intelligence (AI) is heralding the next industrial revolution. Some of these tools are new, some have been refined over preceding decades. However, we are now seeing their rapid convergence into systems – cyber-physical systems – that will have a profound, global economic, social and cultural impact.

Under the leadership of Professor Genevieve Bell, the Autonomy, Agency and Assurance Innovation Institute (3Ai) is building a new applied science to train practitioners who possess the knowledge and hands-on skills unlock the social and economic promises of this technological transformation, and guard against the harms. Established in September 2017 and already taking on its first cohort of students in 2019, 3Ai is leading the world in human impact of AI.

Through the vehicle of the 3A Institute, the ANU will educate a new cohort of people who can critically examine and manage technological constellations – these cyber-physical systems – through the life-cycle from design to deployment to de-commissioning.
