Event description

Description

Mr John Langford, the grandson of Charles Weston, will be launching Canberra Tree Week 2018 with Tara Cheyne MLA.

Charles Weston was appointed Officer in Charge of Afforestation in Canberra in May 1913. He was tasked with creating an urban landscape compatible with the building of the capital city and to establish a local forestry industry. Nearly 1.2 million trees were planted between 1921 and 1926 under his guidance.

The launch will also include a formal handover of historic documents and photos from Charles Weston’s personal collection (Weston Family Papers) to the ACT Government. The Weston Family Papers will be held at the ACT Heritage Library to ensure Weston’s legacy will be preserved for generations to come. This will be one of the most significant collections received by the ACT Heritage Library in the library’s history.

Morning tea will be provided. The launch will be followed by an optional tour of the English Gardens, hosted by the Friends of ACT Trees at 10am.

In the event of unfavourable weather the event will move into the Oaks Brasserie and Gallery (adjacent to the English Gardens)
