About this Event

Join us for this new National Family History Month event. Find out how to locate UK records from the Australian Joint Copying Project online collection, hear how oral histories can be used for family history, explore how to overcome your research roadblocks and learn the fundamentals of writing to help shape your research into an engaging narrative that your family will enjoy reading.

The program includes the following sessions:

Records from the UK (Australian Joint Copying Project)

The Australian Joint Copying Project (AJCP) is a collection of historical records relating to Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific copied from archives in the UK and Ireland. It includes a diverse range of material from British Government records to personal archives and manuscripts of leading politicians, explorers, scientists and missionary societies. Now digitised by the National Library via Trove find out how you can access and use these records.

Oral history for family historians

Oral histories complement the more traditional forms of history making such as written histories and biographies. They are increasingly being used by family history researchers to put into context the life experiences of family members. Discover how the Library's oral history collection might assist your research.

Writing a family history that people will want to read

Explore the fundamentals of writing to help shape your research into an engaging narrative that your family will all enjoy reading. Particular narrative techniques will be explained and there is a take home workbook.

Panel discussion: Rethink your roadblocks

Hitting a roadblock in your research can be frustrating but doesn't necessarily mean you've reached the end of the line. In this session you'll hear from some experienced librarians who will share some of the tips and tricks with you.

Tour of the family history area

(an optional session at the end of day)

We'll take you for a quick tour of the Library's Family History area and show you where some of the most key resources are located.
