Enjoy an evening of queer storytelling in Auslan, by LGBTIQ members of the Deaf community (both hearing and Deaf). Sharing stories about how Deafness intersects with sexuality and gender identity in unexpected (and often hilarious) ways, the evening will be presented in Auslan with interpreters for hearing audience members.

What happens if a Deaf person falls in love with a hearing person who cannot sign? How do the quirks of Auslan - no gendered pronouns, no agreed sign for QUEER or INTERSEX, signs for GENDER and PARENTS that are compound signs made from MALE and FEMALE - impact on how Deaf people define their gender identities and their sexual orientation? How does being Deaf change the experience of drag? Of being HIV+? Of using Grindr? Of navigating polyamorous relationships? Which is harder- coming out of the closet or coming out as being Deaf in a hearing-centric LGBTIQ world?

This series of Late Night Library Special: Coming Out As Deaf is produced by City of Sydney and presented in collaboration with Maeve Marsden.

In its seventh year, City of Sydney’s Late Night Library is kicking goals creatively and continues to provide emerging Creative Producers an opportunity to explore and develop new work.

In 2015 and 2016 Maeve Marsden developed work for Late Night Library that has gone on to receive 5 star reviews at Sydney Festival and has played to packed houses at festivals round the country. Her storytelling project, Queerstories, won Best Spoken Word at Sydney Fringe and is now a monthly event at Giant Dwarf. For our 2017 Late Night Library Specials series, we’re bringing Maeve back to present four compelling performances across the year.
