Description

Relief printmaking workshop with Gary Shinfield

For this workshop participants will be asked to bring their landscape experiences into the workshop. This could be the backyard or a recent holiday as a starting point. you will be guided through the process between idea and print by Gary, using woodb;lock and lino block printing.

Lino is easier to carve than wood and for this reason lino blocks will be available. The wood provided will be shina plywood and is easy to carve. Blocks will be carved on the first day, and on the second we will experiment with various ways of printing - relief and intaglio methods, layering and adjacent placements, and various paper types.

This workshop will include wood or lino blocks, relief printing inks (water based) and some general carving tools. There will be a additional fee payable to the Tutor.

Participants need to provide paper for printing – smooth is best. Asian papers can be used. If you have carving tools bring them along.

Gary Shinfield makes journeys into the landscape searching for connections with aspects of various places, as the subject for prints.

By experiencing a new, or, familiar environments the artist begins to engage with aspects of a place that we begin to see and feel in a different way. We are no longer tourists passing through and observing, but artists relating to and communicating with what is being offered.

Recently Gary spent some time on the Oxley River in Northern NSW. drawing/painting on the riverbank and began a series of ink sketches trying to capture the movement of the river. He then painted directly onto woodblocks, and carved them on location.

Gary Shinfield is a Sydney based artist working predominantly in various forms of printmaking.

He also produces drawings, paintings and mixed media works on paper.

In 2004 he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts by research at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Sydney. The project, entitled the Space through which the Figure Moves, resulted in several journeys to the Northern Territory where large-scale lino and woodcut prints were produced.

He is currently a lecturer in Fine Arts/Printmaking at Hornsby College, Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE, and has been lecturing in printmaking since 1990.

Gary has had 16 major exhibitions in Australia, the most recent being a solo exhibition entitled Fringe Dweller, shown at Hardware Gallery in Sydney in 2011. This exhibition also featured a number of paintings and drawings. Work exhibited was predominantly printmaking, including lino and woodcuts, etchings and mixed media works on paper. A collaborative exhibition with Geraldine Berkemeier entitled Shifting Ground (based on journeys along the Hunter River in NSW) was shown at Red Gallery in Melbourne in 2011.
