Description

This field day will cover practical aspects of managing sheep based around jobs to do at and after lamb marking. Topics covered will include lamb marking, weaning, castration, tail docking, mothering up, vaccinations and ewe management after weaning. Under supervision, participants will get the opportunity to handle sheep. The theory of why lamb marking is necessary and sheep health at weaning time will be discussed. You will get the opportunity to learn about managing different breeds of sheep and participants will be encouraged to ask questions and get involved.

Bill Johnson and Matt Lieschke from South East Local Land Services will lead the field day.

Bill Johnson is the District Veterinarian based in Goulburn for South East Local Land Services. He has worked in both the public and private sector in a professional career that has spanned over 30 years. Graduating from Sydney University, Bill initially worked in the western district before returning to the Goulburn region. Especially known for his knowledge and expertise as a sheep veterinarian, Bill has served as President of the Australian Sheep Veterinarians and has presented at a number of District Vet conferences.

Matt Lieschke is the Senior Land Services Officer – Livestock and is also based in Goulburn. Matt's role at South East Local Land Services is the development and delivery of extension programs for livestock. These programs cover grazing management, soil fertility, weaner performance (sheep and cattle) and beef marketing. Matt has a particular interest in animal nutrition, reproduction and how to increase farm profitability without increasing risk. Matt is passionate about animal husbandry and sharing his skills and knowledge with farmers on farms big and small.

The ticket price is $ 20.00 (plus booking fee $ 2.00). A hearty morning tea is provided.
