About this Event
The Lakeside Events team are a group of students studying the Diploma of Sports Development at Box Hill Institute Lakeside Campus. We are working alongside Yarra Ranges council and Box Hill Institute to launch a new initiative promoting the “We Can Ride” Youth MTB program. The aim is to increase physical activity, social connection and improve mental health of the youth in the Yarra Ranges area through MTB.
This Launch event also promotes the new Warburton MTB project and trails around the Yarra Valley. As well as Box Hill Institute new MTB programs aiming to kick off in 2021.
We Can Ride Youth Development Program
The “We Can Ride” program is aimed at getting kids and families into riding. The structured program will kick off in Term 2021 and we will be running come and try sessions during November and December , based on current circumstances, fingers crossed we are riding sooner that that!!
Key areas of focus for the program;
- Get more kids / teenagers into riding
- Get more female riders involved
- Influence mum and dad to get on the bike
- Equipping them with the necessary skills
- Giving them an insight into how a bike works
- Insight into trail building
- Building resilience and confidence / support positive mental health amongst young people
- Creating a team of “We can Ride” participants and social connectedness
- Potentially get them involved at a club or just wanting to ride the local trails more
- Connect with our local partners and sponsors
The program will be facilitated with qualified PMBIA Level 1 Instructors and BHI have recently purchased a new fleet of 20 MTB for youth and adult riders and we are currently looking at a fleet for junior riders (primary school kids). The idea of the program is that it will be a MTB version of Aus Kick, in some cases we will take the bikes to a school or location to break down some of those barriers to participation.
